<< RACISM EXHIBITED, MAN HIT ~ MAIN ~ DEMS DIVIDED >>
BOOK OF 2006
Alan Gold reviews Mark Steyn’s America Alone for The Australian:
Steyn is possibly the funniest man alive and his book is a gag a minute. Forget stand-up comedians who sweat nightly on stage to make their audiences laugh: any 10 lines of Steyn’s book will have you laughing hysterically until you realise he’s writing with profound insight into the most terrorising of all subjects: Islamic fanaticism.
Buy it here. Incidentally, Steyn’s book is beaten laughs-per-line by Antony Loewenstein’s My Israel Question, which generates hysterical laughter every ten words.
Tim, no fair. Steyn writes his words once and leaves them be. Flavius has to rewrite his with each printing… and change the pictures, too.

How can Ant do otherwise, richard? So many crayons, so many choices…...

It must have had big impact. Now she wants 3 or 4 kids and yesterday I found her surfing for information on immigrating to the US.

The ceremonies at Parris Island were wonderful and the Parris Island Marine Corps Band was awesome; I have never seen such precise movements by a group of people in my life (the band members looked like moving parts in an exceptionally efficient machine).
Our own Marine was practically unrecognizable. He’s always been slender, but he has added muscle and stood ramrod straight. He also extended his arm to Mrs. Paco to escort her hither and yon, while patiently answering her questions (“So, what’s the difference between a ‘head’ and a ‘bulkhead’?”). On Family Day, he took us around to the Confidence Course, his barracks, the museum, and various other places (including the PX, of course). It was highly amusing to see this “grizzled veteran” stop and look at some “raw recruits” who were learning martial arts and hear his editorial comments (“You know their problem? Not enough intensity.”). We met his drill instructors, who were exquisitely polite; but you could tell that they were some very tough fellows. And the way those guys can yell! During the graduation ceremony, you could hear the sergeants’ voices clearly from one end of the parade deck to another (we’re talking about a place the size of several football fields). An astonishingly inspriring graduation ceremony. We are so proud of Paco, Jr., and, indeed, all those fine young men. God bless them.
Congrats to Paco, Jr., and his family !
Another new book that deserves attention is P J O’Rourke’s humorous de-obfuscation of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations.
Required reading for college grads, who usually got nothing useful re economics in their education.
In the USA, CSpan-2 is doing three solid hours on it, so crank up the Tivos and VCRs at Noon Sunday EST , 9AM PST.

It’s also available in audible book form at the Australian itunes store if you couldn’t be fagged going down to the bookstore (or it’s a typical lefty running the show, and they don’t stock it, or have hidden it behind the latest missive from Chris Masters). It’s 9 hours, 54 mins and 10 seconds long.
#13: Thanks, Grimmy. Right now he’s plain vanilla infantry, so he’ll be going to Camp Geiger in North Carolina for a couple of months for Infantry School, and then he thinks probably California for desert training for several months (although he’s not positive about that).
#10: Thanks, Stats. We’ll try to scan a picture.
Semper Fi Paco. Congratters to Paco, Jr. on becoming a Marine. Also for qualifying as Expert. I hope that sort of thing still adds a few more bucks to the monthly pay.
Mark Steyn’s humor is the jam that makes the pill of his serious points go down more comfortably.

Downloaded Steyn’s book to my iPod. Brilliant, witty, quite intense. Had to stop after a couple of hours and take break. Too much. Switched to Grisham’s latest drivel. Gonna go back to Steyn after I regather my strenght. Someone please tell me ... there’s a happy ending?

From the moment I picked Loewenstein’s book up until I laid it down I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it.

I bought his book which he personally signed after he added the comment ‘Let’s win this thing’
He really is very funny but the subject is deadly serious.
