COMMENCE THE FORBIDDEN ACTIVITIES

Happy Valentine’s Day! To celebrate, Ganesh Sahathevan sends a translation of this cheery Valentine message from Malaysian news agency Bernama:

Islam forbids the celebration of Valentine’s Day, said Muhammad Ramli Nuh, the deputy chairman of the Committee for the Development of Islam Hadhari, Terrenganu State.

He explained that celebrating Valentine’s Day may be perceived as an affirmation of an enemy of Islam because Valentine, or Valentinus, was involved in the planning and attack on Cordoba, a Muslim civilization.

Hence to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to affirm the acts of one who destroyed the Islamic civilization of Spain.

Sounds like a good reason to celebrate even more. And here’s another:

He added that Valentine’s Day meetings could also lead to couples engaging in forbidden activities.

  12. Yep. That doesn’t surprise me. I was born in Malaysia (though I now call myself Australian). Malaysia is a muslim dominated country with non-Muslim minorities (predominant Chinese and Indian).

Part of the Malaysian psychology is the major inferiority complex that the Malays have. The agrarian lifestyle of the traditional Malay simply does not match that of upwardly mobile immigrant cultures. Malay Muslims, otherwise known as Bumiputras, receive special privileges and favours that other Malaysians are not entitled to. Examples of this include awarding of government contracts to Malay owned companies, and a university quota system based on race (hence why so many Chinese-Malaysians come to Australian universities).

One of the few privileges of not being a Muslim in Malaysia is not having to worry about the religious police. If you happen to be Muslim however, amongst the other offences you can be convicted of is ‘Khalwat’. This is when a man and a woman (who are not married or related) are in close proximity with no one else around.

Luckily, being from a Chinese background, I could spend as much time as I wanted in close proximity to all the other non-believers.

The group kicked off its campaign Friday against “Lover’s Day” in Srinagar, the state’s summer capital, by raiding half a dozen shops, confiscating Valentine’s Day cards and making a bonfire out of them. The aim of Valentine’s Day is to “pave the way for Western culture to invade youths’ hearts and minds and distance them from their traditional culture and Islamic principles,” added Andrabi. The group has previously smeared black paint on film posters portraying semi-naked women.

Good news for the Deputy Chairman. According to catholic forums site, who you’d expect to know a great deal more about the topic than the Deputy Chairman, Saint Valentine was a martyr who died in the 3rd Century, before Islam had even been invented and long before the Muslims had got to Spain, so he’d have been pretty unlikely to have been involved in planning an attack on Cordoba.

Looks like the good people of Terrenganu State can celebrate after all, as long as they don’t engage in forbidden activities, (which in Islam is just about everything).

  61. Earlier today in # 34 I asked

“Once the Fatwa is issued should it have a time limit on it?”

Well it seems there is no time limit according to the below story I pulled off The Australian news site just now.
    “Rushdie death sentence still stands
    From correspondents in Tehran
    February 15, 2006
IRAN’S fatwa or religious edict condemning British author Salman Rushdie to death over his novel The Satanic Verses will remain in force “forever”, the official news agency IRNA said.”

So it seems fences will never be mended with “these” people. Forgive and forget? apparently “fuck that”.

It is unfortunate that when someone comes asking me to donate for some (generally for a muslim dominated country)money to help with relief efforts I am reluctant to hand over my hard earned dosh. Whilst I sympathy with the people actually affected by whatever disaster is placed upon them, apparently their “god” is “testing” them, so if this is the case, get on with it. Whilst it might a harsh judgement, TFB.

The only slight problem with this line of reasoning is that St. Valentine died on Feb. 14, 269 A.D. and Mohammed founded the Islamic religion in 622 A.D.  So I’d like Mr. Nuh to explain how Valentine was involved in the planning and attack on any Muslim civilization when no Muslim civilization existed until more than three and a half centuries after his death.  Until Mr. Nuh does explain that, I’ll have a hard time taking him seriously (although many will not, of course).

Hey, can you take anybody seriously who resents a day devoted to loving people (my granddaughter just handed me a loving Valentine she made, and the three year old has not even asked me to dance)? And to think, had had to reach back any number of (phony) centuries to justify his resentment! By the way, do the Muslies have any day devoted to the day of love between a man and woman, children and parents, or between others. Having lived in Iran for years, I never noticed any. I did notice rampant (barely hidden) homsexuality, but no day devoted to it.

Not defending Mr. Nuh here, but it’s conceivable that there was someone named Valentinus involved in the attack on Cordoba - names tending to get reused and all that - however, it was definitely not *the* Valentine, for reasons that have already been pointed out.  Of course, by his logic, no Muslim should be allowed to wear green on St. Patrick’s day because someone named Paddy once spraypainted graffiti on a mosque, nor would they allowed to attend St. Andrews University because there are currently infidel soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq named Andrew, and looking at brochures for St. Kitts and St. Thomas would be out because at least two crusaders were named Christopher and Thomas and ... damn it, my head hurts.

In fact, given that he was one of the followers of the Prophet Jesus in the era before Muhammad’s uncorrupted revelation, and was martyred for his (however distorted) faith in Allah by persecuting pagans, St. Valentine is a pre-Muhammad martyr who would have, when he died, received an allotment of 72 virgins in Heaven.

  75. #29 artful-dodger, it’s now ‘wowsers’ at all, it’s simply those Moslems being Moslem. The girls you know are not as informed about their own faith… were they to look into the heart of Islam, they’d find that they should not celibrate St. Valentine’s Day.

What I’m trying to say here is that the ‘problem’ Moslems are not mere minority radicals that have got their own faith wrong; they’ve in fact got it right. The problem is Islam itself. If practiced right, it leads to such things as blowing up buses etc.

Islam is at its heart the problem - fortunately (in this case) most people don’t know that much about their own religion and just practice a few of the basics

  77. 5 Week Sexual Health and Intimacy Course for Muslims

    Saturdays 12pm-2pm TBC Wed 1 March 2006

Mission of Hope brings the Muslim Community the first seminars in sexual reproductive health and intimacy from an Islamic perspective for Muslim men and women. Current medical and health issues in reproductive and sexual health, as well as intimacy between husband and wife will be discussed over 5 weeks. The first 3 weeks are open to all Muslim males and females over the age of 16, the final 2 weeks the classes will be reduced to only include engaged or married men and women because of the sensitivity of such content. The classes will be run by Muslim health and related practitioners. This short course hopes to meet the sexual health and intimate needs of both husband and wife from an Islamic perspective as this is something neither well known nor widely understood in our culture. Separate venues for male and females.Online registration is necessary for this course.

  78. #78 1.618 given that it’s for Moslems, I don’t see why under-age girls can’t attend - as Muhammad ‘consummated’ his marriage with Aisha when she was nine…

    From Bukhari vol. 7, #65:
“Narrated Aisha that the prophet wrote the marriage contract with her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old[. Hisham said: “I have been informed that Aisha remained with the prophet for nine years (i.e. till his death).”“

    Bukhari vol. 7, #88:
“Narrated Urwa: “The prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death).”“

    Bukhari vol. 5, #234 says:
“Narrated Aisha: The prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six. We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Harith Kharzraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became all right, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, “Best wishes and Allah’s blessing and a good luck.” Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah’s messenger came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age.”

And even today, Moslem advice sites think this is okay…

Question: Is it possible to have intercourse with girls before puberty, would not this physically and mentally harmful to the girl. Is such a thing permissible in Islam, and if it is permissible then what is the minimum age for marriage execution in Islam, since puberty is not a requirement.

Answer: In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Jurists discussed the issue of marrying a girl before puberty, i.e. a girl who might not be able to have sexual intercourse due to her young age.

They agreed that the Wali can marry a girl before puberty. But when she reaches puberty, she has the right to choose either to nullify the marriage contract or to continue her marital life.

Also, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married `Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, before she reached the age of puberty.

Hence, we conclude that puberty is not a condition for executing marriage. The only condition is the wife’s ability to bear responsibilities of marital life. However, we do not recommend marriage before puberty because at that early age the girl can’t fulfil her obligations towards her husband properly, nor can she know her rights towards him.

Thus, to avoid any negligence or liability on her part we do not recommend marriage at such an early age.

    Allah Almighty knows best.

Such a wonderful academic answer DR.

Do you have a “diploma” i Law in Austalia and you preach this literally in Australia it’s ok to marry here at 9 and have sex with little girls here in the West? Do such practises occur in the community here?

  83. #75 That taffeta dress was less gay than those musketeer uniforms!  In fact, Bread 8-track tapes were less ... well, wait… okay maybe not.  Carry on.

Stooped Over in a Compromising Position,

Look, I don’t know how things work at your vacation home on Brokeback Mountain.  But in Ohio the rightwing men don’t wear dresses.  And I haven’t a clue what taffeta is.  Is that made out of taffy?

As far as The Three Musketeers is concerned, if you think their outfits are a bit gay looking, rent the 1975 Richard Lester version.  Possibly my #1 movie of all time.  Very cool leather breeches and waist coats and the feathers and silk shirts just bring some (insert fancy French word here) to the ensemble.

And don’t put down Bread.  Their 8 track tape got me farther with girls on dates than my skinny body and squeaky voice would have otherwise.  (And being President of my high school student council did jack on that score also).

  84. The program found three main factors causing the high rates among the Arabs: infections, home births, and diseases resulting from inbreeding. About 40 percent of Muslim and Druze women and 70 percent of Bedouin women in the region were found to be married to first—or second-degree relatives.

Through an information campaign, the infant mortality from infections and home births has almost been eliminated in Western Galilee. The health program is now trying to tackle the inbreeding problem, using ultrasound screening for pregnant women in consanguineous marriages, articles in the media, and study days for health workers, schoolteachers, and religious and community leaders on the harmful effects of inbreeding. The program emphasizes the fact that consanguineous marriage is in no way mandated by Islam.

Rooted in ancient custom, consanguinity is nonetheless widespread in the Arab world; for example, a 1989 study in Iraq found 53 percent of the subjects to be consanguineously married. One result is the prevalence of extended clans that lead to nepotism and lower levels of identification with the state. The clan structure is a major factor in the Arab world’s endemic corruption and lack of civil society.

  85. geez, this topic is well…

Marriages between cousins should be banned after research showed alarming rates in defective births among Asian communities in Britain, a Labour MP said last night. The report, commissioned by Ann Cryer, revealed that the Pakistani community accounted for 30 per cent of all births with recessive disorders, despite representing 3.4 per cent of the birth rate nationwide. It is estimated that more than 55 per cent of British Pakistanis are married to first cousins, resulting in an increasing rate of genetic defects and high rates of infant mortality. The likelihood of unrelated couples having the same variant genes that cause recessive disorders are estimated to be 100-1. Between first cousins, the odds increase to as much as one in eight. In Bradford, more than three quarters of all Pakistani marriages are believed to be between first cousins.

The city’s Royal Infirmary Hospital has identified more than 140 different recessive disorders among local children, compared with the usual 20-30.

It’s good for Westerners to pay for this tribal customer, in that it’s good for research.

For my part, I have evidenced Islamic sites that confirm the primary Islamic sources that I also quoted (with regard to Muhammed and his under-age bride). (see #79 above)

  98. Interesting written blog found on web.

    Islamic Civilization? What an oxymoron!

Since when barbarity is called civilization?

Islam is an anti civilization cult par excellence. It destroyed every civilization that it touched. It brought misery, poverty, ignorance and war in every country that it invaded

I wonder when the world is going to wake up and respond to MUSLIM BIGOTRY! Isn’t it time that we stopped this pee cee game and start looking at the harsh reality that the problem with Islamic terrorism is Islam itself?

Is the mainstream media going to continue hiding its head in the sand until another catastrophe hit?

It seems that the west is determined to deceive itself? Why? The truth is simple.

Islamic terrorism is motivated by the teachings of the Quran. Read the Quran and you will see it for yourself where the terrorists get their inspiration. Islam is not a religion of peace. You cannot eliminate terrorism unless you eliminate the ideology behind it. It is time that we focus on the cause and not the symptom. It is time that Mr. Bush stop beating around the bushes, stop calling Islam a religion of peace and start calling a spade a spade.

  101. etc etc.. I like we are called reverts.

I commend your honesty sis, but as the Arabic saying goes ‘s’aal mjarreb me tes’al 7akeem’. It is indeed tempting to go for something ‘different’, but there are certain pertinent issues that need to be kept in mind.

~Cultural differences- you may say, ‘well I have also been culturalised in the West’, but nevertheless, I am quite sure that your ethnic heritage and more importantly your Islamic heritage would have taken precedence in your upbringing. No matter how ‘Westernised’ you might think you are, there are still many many issues that will inevitably arise whereby cultural differences are an impediment and obstacle. I am happy to go into more detail if you’re interested, but I think I’ve made my point.

~Different paradigms/frames of reference- even reverts will have difficulties understanding/interpreting matters from your paradigm of interpretation (everything from matters pertaining to child-rearing to politics!) How would you cope with the knowledge that your life partner supports the so-called country of Isreal???

~ Family matters- often you will not have the support of his family or yours for that matter, and again, this might be underplayed but in the grand scheme of things family support and acceptance is indeed vital and important.

~ Old habits die hard- Yes, reverts often come to the religion with amazing fervour, but that does not always mean that old practices/beliefs/ideologies won’t resurface in some context or another. As long as you’re prepared sister!

~ Collectivist vs Individualist- Islam, by its very nature is built on the principles of community. We as individuals are taught to be selfless and to work for the betterment of our families and communities (ie we are a collectivist society). Westerners however come from a very different school of thought, whereby its all about me me me (ie the individual reigns supreme- an individualist society). This can affect many Islamic aspects- for example, in a Westerners’ mind a woman’s financial contribution to the household is valued as much as (and sometimes even more than) her contribution as wife and mother. Indeed a woman should have the choice to work, but it should be just that- a choice, and should not define or impact on her value as a woman.

~She’s so lucky!!!- This is something, as a woman married to a revert, you will have to live with on a daily basis Im afraid. Everyone idealises your relationship and even envies it. Being the object of such attention might be appealing at first, but it gets tedious, overwhelming and just plain annoying after a while.

The bottom line is…a man is a man is a man. I’m sure you catch my drift!

    Wasalam

  102. Essentially, what you are saying is that a male revert will come into Islam with a lot of cultural traits and preconceptions that are un-Islamic.

But then a lot of those born into Muslim households may also hold a lot of cultural traits and preconceptions that are un-Islamic as well. The person you want is the one who will make every effort to discard these traits and bring themselves closer to the example olf the Prophet.

If you want to argue that ‘born Muslims’ are more likely to make the effort and succeed, then i’d just point out that since revert has made a conscious choice to adopt a new culture (of Islam) they are probably more aware of the distinction between ethnic culture and the true deen.

Secondly, while a revert’s family may put pressure on them to leave Islam, they do not have to face the confusion of a family who call themselves Muslim but whose behaviour may be far from the ideal.

so Flo, i think your remarks are unblalanced, tending to presume the worst of the revert and the best of ‘born Muslims’.

    salaams
