DISOWNERS WELCOMED

The church of Andrew Sullivan welcomes a few more members:

Virtually the entire conservative movement is now disowning this administration and this Congress. I welcome every single one.

Including Pat Buchanan and his paleo friends, whose, er, excesses Sullivan breezily sweeps aside:

Yes, there’s the usual anti-Semitic undertow here. It’s Buchanan’s posse. At the same time, on the simple facts on the ground ...

... Sullivan has thrown it all away. Only a couple of years ago, he denied Buchanan was even a conservative:

Buchanan cannot, I think, be described as a conservative. He’s an economic leftist with social fascist tendencies.

Now Sullivan welcomes Buchananites—part of the “conservative movement” once more—back to his weird political sector. Sullivan might be the least consistent pundit of the last decade.

  4. Gosh, this could be the first time I am first!  Regardless of that point, I have felt for some years that Andrew Sullivan has been a loop, if not worse (i.e. attention-seeking dirt bag who puts foward views solely in order to gain or maintain notoriety a la Germaine Greer).  I read a compelling character-assasination of him about a year ago.  I’ll try to find it and post the link.

  5. No, no, no.  Sully is consistent in his inconsistency.

  6. Sullivan’s obsession with leading the charge from atop the same dreary hobby-horse has completely marginalized him. How frustrating it must be for him that the words “conservative” and “catholic” have meanings defined by authorities other than himself.

  8. Sullivan is basically a party of one, but in his own mind he’s the only Christian conservative in the United States, but only if you buy into his own, very peculiar definition of the words “Christian,” “conservative,” “United States” and, possibly, “in” and “the.”

  9. I emailed this to Sullivan a few minutes ago ...

There’s a saying in Yiddish - “az der putz shet, licht der seichel in drerd”.  When the penis is talking, common sense goes to hell.  Lately, when it comes to opinions about anything serious, you’re no better than a horny teenager with sex on the brain.  You’ll climb into bed with dreck like Buchanan, whom you otherwise detest, if you can use him to satisfy your lust to harm Bush.

    Go take a cold shower!

  10. o/t Fair dinkum letter in today’s Oz:

As November 9 approaches, I’m reminded that when I was in Paris a couple of months ago, the events of five years previous were referred to as “Le 11 Septembre”. The French were not going to abandon their preferred order of day/month/year just because the terrorists attacked in America. Our 9/11 is this Thursday, folks.

    WTF?!  They publish that shit?

I fired off this response which is unlikely to be published:

Thanks to the fearlessness of Bill Forbes and the Letters’ Editor of The Australian, one of the great crimes of the millenium has finally been exposed:  The vandalism of our calendar by the evil American hegemon.  Is there no limit to the malevolence of Bush and his wicked minions?

  11. At this point, what is the difference between an anybody-who-hates-Bush-is-my-friend lefty at Daily Kos and Andrew anybody-who-hates-Bush-is-my-friend Sullivan?  They’re both unreadable in their relentless harping on the same points and refusal to wrestle with the serious questions of the middle east.

And if they don’t like Jews, what does he think Buchanan’s far-right-wingers think about homosexuals?

  14. One of the defining characteristics of Leftism is the relentless debasement of language (Bush=Hitler, Tim Blair’s commentoers are fascist warmongers, everything one disagrees with is ‘an outrage,’ etc., etc.) in an effort to control narrative and discourse.

In this, at least, Sullivan discredits whatever conservative bona fides he has.

  18. Well since he has crawled into bed with Buchanan, I say its time to disown Sulivan as a conservative.  Any time someone starts telling me they are conservative because they agree or read or listen to Buchanan, I immediately tune them out.

The epitome of what you are saying - Carter’s new book about the “apartheid” of Israel!  He knows less about apartheid than I do about peanut farming (and I don’t even know how to breed them).

The only relief in this matter comes from the fact that he’s the author, so we all know exactly how seriously his book will be taken.  Nuff said!

  21. I stopped reading Sullivan when he started in with the unbecoming hissy fits at Glenn Reynolds over on Instapundit.  I mean, c’mon Sully!  Glenn is supposed to be some sort of torture-apologist, according to you, but here you are overlooking Buchananite anti-semitism?  Wha…?  Sorry, but Sullivan has become a one issue thinker, and has ignored the fact that his single issue will be moot if we lose on the actual only issue that matters.  What a hysterical ninny he’s become.

  27. Does this imply that the blogmire is a haven for conservatives that are socially progressive? Or for a kinder gentler kind of fascist that elides Isreal from it’s hatelist but declares open season on everyone else?
