It seems every weekend brings a new bullet-riddled horror, be it a 4-year-old hit in a drive-by or a 22-year-old gang member slain in a turf war. Early yesterday, three people were gunned down and two died in the Wellesley and Sherbourne area.
But Michael Moore told us Toronto was so peaceful that people didn’t even lock their doors!
One of the things I loved about living in Buffalo was having Canada ten minutes away. Lovely place to visit (Niagara region of Ontario), but Christ, the Canadians are headcases. Everything, and I mean everything, is talked about in relation to the US - and always in the tone of, “Here’s why we’re better than them.” It’s always done with a creepy vibe best described as “smug desperation.” Or “desperate smugness.” Take your pick.
I guess it’s a little-brother syndrome or something.
As far as blaming the US for violence in Toronto, I have to be fair and say it’s not just a Canadian thing. I remember reading a piece in the French media about escalating street violence there, in which the writer decried the “growing Americanization of violence.” The phrase is nonsensical, of course, but the intent is clear. There’s no problem you can’t blame on the Yanks.
Everything the U.S. does affects Canada in some way. Too bad, so sad, but unavoidable (common border, common language mostly, pretty much a common base culture). But it’s easy to blame, and much less easy to accept responsibility for one’s own welfare.
It’s not like we “Yanks” just kick our problems over the border without having to cope with them ourselves. Canucks, want us to fix our common problems? Tell us how.
But…but Canada has the benefits of the complete gun control the libs tell us will solve all our crime problems. So, for that matter, do the Brits and French, who are having a hideous surge in crime, so that parts of London have much worse rates of various crimes than does New York.
I think a theory is being disproved here.

But not, I think, gun homicides? Parts of London have worse rates of various crimes not because of our strict gun control laws, which we’ve had for almost a century, during which time violent crime was very low. Violent crime has quadrupled under Blair because the police have given up enforcing the law for a number of reasons.
Being a multicultural society, we Canadians have no choice but to officially embrace and celebrate violent gang culture, adding another (admittedly somewhat bloody) tile into our diverse and vibrant mosaic!
It is gratifying to see our billion-dollar gun registry working out so well, though! What, criminals don’t register their weapons? Quelle surprise!
