EDITOR’S HIDING SKILLS PRAISED

Gideon Haigh reviews the Jaspanised Melbourne Age:

The Metro section, Haigh went on, “makes (Melbourne’s free daily) MX look like Le Monde”. “The op-ed pages, which I used to think were quite good, have turned into the most predictable plod of unobjectionable and fundamentally uninteresting middle-class liberal opinion,” he said. Haigh repeated what many Melbourne journalists believe, that the Fairfax board has always despised The Age, and said he had never met Jaspan but had seen him speak. “If he knows a lot about newspapers, he hid it very well that day. It’s simply stupid to call The Age a work in progress. Work stops every 24 hours and a paper comes out, Mr Jaspan. Your work in progress is like having a conversation with someone with Tourette syndrome.”

A number of Age staffers have similar views, if recent email is any guide.

  1. Is it a sort of sheltered workshop for otherwise unemployable left/liberals?

Hello ... does anyone really care?
