FINE LINE CROSSED

Reuters reports:

UN peacekeepers have been banned from all sex with the local population in Congo because of widespread, continuing abuse of women and girls ...

UN regulations for soldiers usually forbid sex with anyone under 18 and forced prostitution. But often officials found there was a fine line between forced and willing sex.

Words fail.

  1. That fine line: Per Reuters? Or per the UN?

    What, the

“I’m going to kill you if you don’t have sex with me”
“ok,ok,I’ll have sex with you - please don’t kill me”

    type of fine line?

  3. I’m glad Kofi is on the job, rooting out those rooters.

  4. forced prostitution?

So, you rape a woman, and then force her to take your money?

  5. What about the Frenchie running the online pedophile ring? They got a problem with that?

  6. What they have a problem with all the unfavorable commentary this generates.  It makes it that much more difficult for the UN to do the important… um, important… er, things they do.

Man, it just isn’t fair, you rape one woman - or, say, maybe a couple hundred, or thousand, let’s not get bogged down in trivial details here - and you’re a “rapist” forever.  It just makes you want to hang up your baby blue helmet.

  7. A fine line…

Because there’s nothing coercive about sex with children at gunpoint as long as you say please…

  8. You know, the UN really is the gift that keeps on giving.  Corruption, ignoring genocide, forced prostitution ...

What next?  Cannibalism?  What can the UN do to disgrace itself further?

  9. The “fine line” bit means “whenever anyone’s looking.”

Hurray for Kofi and his merry band of thugs!

  10. Nice to know that UN peacekeepers have these really nuanced rules of engagement, probably written by Chirac and Kofi over a bottle of cognac.

And now I understand the UN’s position on bribery and corruption.  There’s a “fine line” between stealing money and forcing people to pay.

  11. There’s probably a Eurabian directive somewhere which states that it’s not really rape unless four men saw it happen.

  12. Tim,

If you were european you would understand the nuance between the two.

  13. I was quite surprised by last night’s presentation of the scandal on 20/20 (home of Peter Jennings!).  Film and everything of UN fellows picking up prostitutes!  Have they turned on their masters?  But wait, there’s more. See, it’s all the fault of the head of the mission, who is, you guessed it, from the US.

Repeat until you believe it:  it’s all our fault, it’s all our fault…

Unless of course UN officials are running the prostitution ring. Otherwise the regulation would be bad for business.
