James Lileks on Downsider reaction to US population growth:
For the Downsiders, nothing is cause for celebration, particularly celebrations—they generate waste paper, encourage consumption, promote unhealthy eating, etc. Had the Downsiders been around on V-J day, they’d have seen the famous photo of the sailor smootching the swooning nurse and reacted with a campaign to raise awareness about oral herpes.
The Downsiders are particularly alarmed by the birth of the 300 millionth American, and I suspect they’d be pleased if the li’l nipper was smothered with a pillow.
Strange, isn’t it, that the Downsider community is simultaneously appalled by American deaths in Iraq and American births in America.

It’s been a gruesome day for me. Had to drive up to the Cambridge area this morning.
1. I seem to have acquired a cold;
2. BBC Radio had Fiskie on Desrt Island Disks; and, to top off the torture,
3. they had Pilger on babbling about Iraq and Vietnam.
Good job I wasn’t armed today.
Only one solution: pizzas and a bottle of Mission Hill Cab Sauv from the homeland…

Seems like this will eventually become a self-correcting problem.
If I remember correctly, if not for immigration, cities like N.Y., San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago as well as the State of California would actually have experienced a significant decline in population.

The funny thing about Wal-Mart is their new generic prescription drug program. For $4 USD Wal-Mart will sell you a 30-day’s supply of medication from a list of 135 generic drugs.
The really funny thing is that I’ve got a prescription drug plan that will allow me to spend $10 for a 30-day supply of the same drug that Wal-Mart is now selling, for the same dosage and quantity, for $4.
I’m rather wondering just how big an impact Wal-Mart could have on American drug prices, and the value of the new Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, if Wal-Mart adds more drugs to their available list.

Must agree with The_Real_JeffS’ thinking.
See, it’s kinda like the two ends of
maggotsmagnets that oppose each other. The air in between, is filled with magnetic pulses, but there’s nothing there. Just like the “Downsider community”, if you follow my drift.Beside the fact of being PRO American on anything, just ain’t hip with the “Downsiders”. Is “hip” still in usage?...:).
There is nothing left to say but, DITTO.
Do these people want to live? If they are so concerned about too many people, they can contribute by doing away with themselves. It would cut down on all forms of polution considerably. I challenge them to put their bodies on a funeral pyre where their convictions belong.
I love hearing about these Downsiders getting upset so could all you Americans keep pumping out those little rugrats. The Downsiders are a dying breed, just wait till they end up in retire homes and those kids they didn’t want are paying for their care.
It is like one bloke who had a go at Mum for having too many kids and then, a little while later, asking if those same kids could help him move cattle.
Hypocrisy is such a lovely thing.
Now, see, this is why I’m just an acerbic commentator and not a world-renowned blogger. I’d have just titled this thread “Glass Half Pissed In…”

There are a few words which, when used for political ends, become very suspicious if qualified by an adjective; justice is one of them.
As writer Paul Fussel once pointed out, the US Supreme Court building proclaims, “EQUAL JUSTICE FOR ALL.” But every word besides JUSTICE in that motto is entirely redundant.
And so it is with weasel-wording like social justice. Is justice itself not enough? Why does it need to be further qualified?
The same smelly ideologues who came up with social justice also gave us social democracy - a term that is practically an oxymoron.

It’s not strange at all. The Downsiders simply hate Americans.
Or would that be anyone supporting Western civilization? One has to wonder.
