INTOLERANCE MAPPED

The SMH publishes a map of Sydney racism:

Residents of Mosman and Woollahra have joined those in the Sutherland Shire as among the Sydney people least tolerant of cultural diversity and multicultural values, a map of the city’s racial attitudes reveals ...

The survey is part of work by Associate Professor Jim Forrest, of Macquarie University; Kevin Dunn, of the University of NSW; and others, from which Professor Forrest has produced the map.

Here it is; the chilling map itself. Naturally, according to Professor Forrest, “the least accepting groups were in outer suburbs where populations are mostly solidly Anglo.” So let’s look at the means by which this damning socio-cartography was produced:

In the survey on racial attitudes, residents were asked to respond to two statements: 1) It is a good thing for society to be made up of different cultures. 2) Australia is weakened by different ethnicities sticking to their old ways.

A little simplistic, don’t you think? After all, would the people who agreed with the first statement also agree that, say, white supremacists (a different culture) added to society’s goodness? Would the tolerant Green voters of inner Sydney welcome to their suburbs differently-cultured fundamentalist Christians? Would a culture of difference indicated by female circumcision be a good thing?

As for the second statement (which one must reject to signify tolerance) what of the “old ways” represented by opposition to female employment? Or homosexuality? What if the ethnicity sticking to its old ways happens to be Anglo-Saxon? Speaking of old ways, the survey upon which the SMH’s story is based seems to have been completed in 2001:

Responses to other statements by 5056 people in Queensland and NSW immediately after the September 11 attacks showed 12 per cent held beliefs akin to racial supremacy.

More details about the original survey here. The only new element to the SMH’s front-page lead might be the map. Which would mean the SMH headline (“After the riots: city’s map of racism”) isn’t exactly honest; the data for that map was collected more than four years before the riots.

Editors with a little tabloid finesse may have been able to sneak this bunch of crap past sleepy Boxing Day readers. The SMH, as usual, can’t fool anybody, any time. Oh, and there’s this sidebar piece on a multicultural festival:

At about 2.30pm, said Jamal Daoud, a Blacktown community worker who thought up the festival as a gesture of reconciliation, about 10 “Anglos” gathered near his group in a menacing way. “One of them said something racist but we could not quite make it out.”

But he knew it was racist! Possibly the speaker was someone from a different culture, bitterly sticking to his old ways.

  2. These people are MORONS.

This is all very nice in the abstract, but how do they feel about clitoridectomy?  How do they feel about culturally and religiously-sanctioned wife-beating?  How do they feel about special laws and selective enforcement of the law for people ofrom different “cultures”?  How do they feel about the second-class status of women?  How about raping slutty girls who don’t wear headscarves or who lie on the beach to get a suntan?

Tolerance is great, but not if it destroys the society.

After the leftist media, the universities are the next most effective arm of the cultural assault on our society.

The SMH must have been scouring the sands of Cronulla, desparate to find some MOMA who might just possibly have experienced some sort of racism. I’m surprised they didn’t call up the white supremacists for an instant riot, when they came across Jamal’s group.

  7. From what I remember of doing surveys from the early days and recent political in-fights, that which we see here are not a Survey but Push-Polling.  Such leaden unidirectional questions rank with “Do you still beat your wife.” (no, usually she wins at cards) with their nuance.  What a laughable load of crap, the only explanation is the B team is on holiday (there is no A team) and this is the work of the C team.

A poor attempt to generate guilt amongst their universal enemy (white, Christian, hard working and etc.) I would be tempted to suggest the greatest danger is falling off ones chair laughing.  Good to see that they are reinforcing the decline of the Farifax masthead, when it’s cheap enough on eBay it could be fun to buy.

“It shocked me to the core what happened two weeks ago. I could not believe anybody could come to Cronulla and say, ‘No more Muslims’, ‘Lebanese go home’.

“I was shocked by what happened the following night [the revenge attacks]. But I understood how desperate these people are and how policies of this government turn people into a hopeless situation.”

He was shocked by pissed off Aussies but understands why muslims behaved badly the following evening.

Its Howards fault obviously, couldn’t possibly be anything to do with ten years of ethnic violence from lunatic ‘car enthusiasts of middle eastern appearance’.

Yes, that sentence had me gasping too. Nothing to do with their inherited culture of misguided, antagonistic uselessness flowing from rejection of everything which would assist them to assimilate and become proper, successful citizens who we would be pleased to know and associate with - as we have with the Greeks, Italians, Baltic Stateless, and all the others who have come here in the past. Not just Anglos.
(Becoming prosperous via the drug trade or carjacking/rebirthing does not count!)
Instead we have a criminal sub-culture that is not being dealt with and which we are not (according to the silly moaning herald) allowed to be disrespectful of.
Allowing your group to become a rejectionist Ghetto culture is a form of cultural racism, and self defeating - or should be self defeating, if political correctness does not step in and prevent the normal peer pressures from applying.
We know when we have been sold a pup. If the media continue to tell us what we know to be untruths, we must continue to expose them as a danger to our society.

Normal people mean equanimity at something abnormal by it.

So there’s at least a double meaning floating around, and they’re using it to support a doctrine : cruel customs are things good people accept in others.

It’s called an equation in a word.  One sense is the chief sense of the dictionary word, and the other sense is called out by context, and a claim is made that one implies the other.  ``The word itself says so.’‘

Label the map ``High Acceptance of Cruel Customs’’ and ``Low Acceptance of Cruel Customs’’ and the matter becomes clearer

  16. This story from SMH was taken up as the lead story on the ABC (surprise!!).
I think we should have a law that no opinion polls are to be allowed unless the pollsters clearly define the terms, in some detail, of the questions they are asking. Otherwise, the publication of the results lead to racial prejudice and intolerance.
In particular what is “multiculturalism”? If you meant the bringing into Australia of people from many countries all living together in relative harmony, and respecting each other’s cultures then I would say that it is the best thing that has happened to Australia in the last 60 years. But if it is defined as a carte blanche for some ethnic groups to discriminate against women, deny freedom of speech or religion to others etc etc etc then I am against it.

Also, define “racism”. It cannot be ‘racist’ if someone, for example dislikes, prima facie, Lebanese Muslims but is happy with Lebanese Catholics. It might be bigotry, illogical prejudice against a culture or religion, but it is not racism as these groups share the same DNA. (‘Race’ is defined as “any one of the groups into which the world’s population can be divided on the basis of physical characteristics such as skin or hair colour”)

And what about the head of the Australian Anglican Church, Phillip Aspinall, saying that we had “to get on with people “we don’t know, love or like”. What if the thing we most have against these people is that they don’t know love or like us?

  21. To the extent that multiculturalism was ever explained to the Australian people or those of any other Western democracy by its promoters (the “educated” middle classes), it was portrayed as nothing more than a warm and fuzzy multi-ethnic or cosmopolitan society with new and exotic food, national costumes, music and dancing.

These things are essentially attributes of “lifestyle” not culture and few would object to them.

When however, Australians object to the behaviour of some people from a genuinely different culture which in its various forms encompasses slavery, child marriage, subjugation of women, female genital mutilation, vicious anti-Semitism, intolerance of other cultures etc etc, they find themselves described in the media as “racist”.

Is it any wonder that journalists are held in such low regard?

Speaking of old ways, the survey upon which the SMH’s story is based seems to have been completed in 2001:
If this is the case, ie that it is an old survey then the academics are being completely dishonest (never!) and should be sacked along with the journalists who have attempted to mislead us. And, if this was a lie then Media watch should run with it.
I note that the ABC says it is “new research”
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200512/s1537947.htm

AND the ABC also points out something that the “We-are-all-pack-of-racists” SMH does not, namely….
Despite the findings, Associate Professor Forrest says extreme attitudes in Sydney are not as concerning as those in other societies.“Over here, using the same kind of questions, you get about one person in eight who’s rather over the top in their intolerance,” he said. “In America it’s something like one in three. “So the Prime Minister’s right in that respect, that we’re a much more tolerant society than most.”

Dear God.. you would never get the SMH having anyone say that Howard was right!

AND BTW why only compare us with “America”? What would be the result of a similar survey in e.g. Indonesia, not to mention France or Germany.

“In 2001 a database on racist attitudes was collected, using a telephone survey (5056 sample), funded by an Australia Research Council (ARC) Large Grant. A key finding from the Racism project is that while racism is quite prevalent in Australian society its occurrences differ from place to place. These variations have been largely overlooked by anti-racism campaigns in Australia ...
“In 2005, the racism project will involve another large telephone survey, funded by a second ARC Discovery Project Grant. This survey will be used to collect data on the experience of racism, as well as feelings and reactions to those experiences ...”

Oh, and if ABC used this poll to slam Americans, perhaps they should come visit my town - Upper Darby, PA.  I don’t think anywhere could be more multicultural - the local hospital has signs in English, Greek, Thai, and Spanish, and the local middle school prints its parent-information brochures in 20 languages.  There are Vietnamese Buddhist temples, Indian clothing stores, African-American soul food restaurants, and Caribbean goat meat distributors within walking distance of my house.

Upper Darby was also voted as the 2005 safest city in Pennsylvania.  That would be because of the strict and responsive police force as well as the prevailing blue-collar attitudes that value family, religion, hard work, home ownership, and all those other things that lefties probably disdain.  I’m sure that the ABC would find it “racist” that anyone caught begging outside the WaWa would be thrown into a police car.  I, on the other hand, enjoy the fact that I can walk around here at night and not feel in any danger.

  38. There was an interesting article in one of the papers during the past few days (its Christmas and I have been celebrating).
Some clever bugger in the UK giving a speech saying that it is time Britain moved on from multiculturalism. His argument was that it has been a great success in absorbing lots of migrants from so many parts of the world and managing the subsequent huge changes in what was a pretty homogenous society but now it is time to leave multiculti behind. To not move on, he said, risked seeing the nation (UK) evolve away from being one big tolerant society into a society comprised of many large, insular, intolerant ghettos without an over-riding common purpose.
They didn’t say what the response was to this speech but I can imagine what it would be here in Oz. Geoffrey Blainey could probably give the bloke some advice on coping with the fallout.

  43. #20.The reason given for Police inaction is that the heirarchy has become excessively Politically Correct, the truth is far more sinister. For a decade ALP Branch stackers have enrolled large numbers of “men of Middle Eastern appearance” as members of ALP Branches in a number of Electorates in South-Western Sydney, these people had their membership subs. paid by the stackers and generally were only involved in Branch activities at preselection time when they were called upon to cast a vote for the candidates favored by the stackers.Over time enough of these previously tame folks became aware of their value to the elected Member and the power that they might exert as a consequence. Thus when members of their extended family got into trouble with the Police they looked to the Member for support and were not disappointed and as such good news spreads rapidly through the Community more and more demands are made. The problem is that these pesky front-line coppers keep catching these criminals who make an “honest” living from professions such as dealing drugs and rebirthing stolen motor vehicles.Clearly no sensitive left-leaning ALP Member of Parliament would dream on permitting this unwarranted assault on cultural values to go unchecked and happily an easy solution was available, simply nobble the cops. Can’t be done you might think. Not so because in this State the Boss Coppers are all on term contracts all the way up to and including the Boss of Boss Coppers and renewal of those contracts as well of promotion within the upper ranks is directly at the whim and will of ALP Politicians, some of whom owe their position at the taxpayer funded trough to the stackers and their recruits. So next time you hear that 40 carloads of thugs have assembled in Punchbowl Park an are preparing to launch a “retaliation” raid in some other part of Sydney and are happily flashing their Glock pistols for the benefit of reporters and you also hear that although Police are present in force they don’t approach the armed thugs in fact the are instructed by their superiors “not to antagonise them”,don’t be surprised.

Better than NY, which features pizza, graffiti’ed subway cars, and more pizza.  Or SF, the principal exports of which are hippies.

  51. We are one,but we are many
and from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and speak with one voice-
    I am -you are-we are Australian…

Guaranteed to make you shed a tear when sung by pre school kids at weekly assembly or at the Olympics in Syd-en-ey..
