LAST-LAP LUNACY

Arnoux v Villeneuve, 1979, in a final lap Formula One battle for second place the likes of which some thought would never be seen again.

Until Massa v Kubica, 2007, in Japan. These two are fighting over sixth place.

  4. Ash, sometimes it’s fun to see two testosterone-soaked combatants duke it out, taking things to the limit and beyond.

These guys were nucking futz though. Dangerous Loonies.

    OK, it was magnificent too.

  6. I’m glad to see that the tape of Algore’s son going down the I5 that night finally came out.

I’m glad they are done with Asia, one more race there and those puppies would be growing waterwings.

  7. Completely insane Zoe, but definitely completely magnificent!

  9. Piffle.  NASCAR calls that “rubbing” and “kissing”.

  10. Almost enough to get me to watch F1 racing.  Almost.

  11. I remember watching that 1979 race (on TV). Damn I’m old.
RebeccaH #9, these F1 cars don’t have fenders like in NASCAR. Bad things happen when tires touch at those speeds.

  12. That gave me a hard on.

Remember children: “Accellerate THROUGH the grass!”

F1 rules.  Indy cars puss out at the mere mention of rain.  Hell, high humidity scares them.

  13. F1, feh.

If you finish the race with the same color paint you started with, that ain’t racing.

  14. If the whole race was broadcast like that, I’d watch a lot more.

Too bad the USGP here at home (Indianapolis) is dead.

Sort of makes the ‘79 tussle for second place look a bit tame, doesn’t it?
    And the weather conditions….

    from another angle…(0:45 mins)
and this, much longer view (5:56 mins)

  16. Zanardi passing in the corkscrew at Laguna Seca during the great CART years was every bit as good. And the Sullivan-Little Al duel at Indy puts them both to shame.
