MATTER INVESTIGATED

An email to reader Kae:

Dear Kaelene,

Thank you for your email of 28 March 2008 to the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, the Hon Alan Griffin MP, concerning the use of the word ‘Anzac’ which appears on Perth Indymedia’s website.

The Minister does take issues about the misuse of the word Anzac seriously. The department’s Commemorations area is investigating this matter urgently, and you will be informed of the outcome of the investigation as soon as it is known.

Thank you for bringing this matter to the Minister’s attention.

Regards

Aaron Jobsz, Assistant Adviser

The Hon Alan Griffin MP, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs

No, seriously, kae, well done, well done, indeed. Let’s see if this guy values “feedback” as much as his web site claims he does.

‘snot my fault! It coulda been worse, it coulda been “Narelle”.

    My letter:

    Dear Mr Griffin

I wish to register my disgust at the use of the acronym ANZAC by a group of people who are clueless about the history, honour and suffering behind the ANZAC name, and who sully this tradition by their disrespect of ANZAC.

As an ex-member of the Army Reserve (Military Number, Name, C Coy 4RNSWR in the late 70s), and a citizen with a deep respect of the Military of Australia, I am extremely annoyed at the hijacking of ANZAC name.

The use of the acronym ANZAC is illegal, outlined at the Department of Veterans Affairs webpage (link: to Dept Veteran Affairs “Protection of Anzac page)

I doubt that permission has been sought to use the ANZAC name, however, if permission has been obtained by these people I would strongly recommend that permission be withdrawn and that they be compelled to abandon the use of the ANZAC acronym.

    Kind regards

    Kae

Owing to a typographical error on our original flyer we have provided this updated invite to the training weekend ;-)

No offence was intended to any of the millions of men and women who lost their lives in the horrific bloodbaths of the 20th century.

Please continue with the fiery discussion about the nature and usefulness of nonviolence though - it’s exactly the conversation we were trying to provoke and i was really enjoying it.

    Some usual suspects.

    Mr Waleed Aly Male VIC
    Ms Sharan Burrow Female VIC
    Mr Phillip Adams Male NSW
    Mr David Marr Male NSW
    Father Frank Brennan Male VIC
    Professor Ross Garnaut Male VIC
    Professor John Quiggin Male QLD

For a conference looking for ideas out of the box, it seems to contain a lot of people who have been spouting the same ideas for decades.
    Heres the
    link.

Theres bound to be a lot of fun had googleing some of the names.

Target the Fools - Pull a prank that packs a punch!

If they won’t set targets, target them instead! Mining executives,
bossy bankers, members of parliament - find clowns investing in coal
and corporate contortionists in your community, grab a bunch of
friends (or in your enviro collective/climate action group)and tell
the media as you oust the fools! Pranks can include polar bears at
    petrol stations;

  38. Kae,

The Minister for Fair Trading would be appropriate as well. It’s virtually impossible to register a trading name containing “ANZAC” and as such, they are probably in breach having not set up any form of structure for the organisation.

But then, considering two pissed off Arabs can form “Australian Coalition for Palestinian Goat Herders” and sign an ad in The Australian, I suspect it’s pretty common… Can’t imagine they’d have much in the way of assets beyond a hairshirt and maybe a bong or two.

  49. Sorry, not to be a lefty, but rather a libertarian, surely it is free speech to call yourselves “ANZAC,” even if misguided, no? Why should the government be involved? And yes, I am a student of history and fully understand the sacrifices made at Gallipoli, New Guinea, North Africa and elsewhere, and I surely recognize these people have no particular right to that moniker. And yet, government intervention does not seem to be the answer to me. Rather, ridicule from good citizens, such as commenters here, seems more sporting and much more in line with freedom of speech. [/ducks]

    Because it’s illegal.
Because the name is licensed, and rightly so, because it’s inappropriate for it to be attached to so much drek going on in the world today.
And it’s quite obvious that without some sort of intervention the acronym would not have been changed, because the disrespectful fools at wIndy Media would not have been forced to change their use of the ANZAC name, because they think it’s all a huge joke.
And it isn’t a joke at all.
