<< FOURTH TEST, FIRST DAY ~ MAIN ~ DISSENT AGAINST DISSENTER >>

NATION DIVIDED

The German media’s vision of the US is of a land mired in misery, crime, and hopelessness. What, then, must Germany make of France?

France could face its worst period of social unrest for a decade, analysts and commentators warned, as Dominique de Villepin’s centre-right government returns today from its summer break.

With petrol prices soaring, economic growth hesitant, trade unions furious, public confidence in the country and its political leaders at rock-bottom and a string of unpopular reforms still lying ahead, conditions are ripe for what one analyst, Gerard Mermet, called “genuine social upheaval”.

I blame the rouge states.

  6. This would be a great time for a Blitzkrieg.  I wish I could properly attribute this, but I failed to catch the source when I grabbed it.

“This just in by urgent e-mail from a friend:

In light of the recent security alerts in London, the French government has announced within the last hour that it has raised its terror alert level from ‘Run’ to ‘Hide’. The only two higher levels in France are ‘Surrender’ and ‘Collaborate’. The rise comes only days after a fire which destroyed France’s only white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the nation’s central military capability.”

  7. Wait till the riots start in the Muslim slums.  “Social unrest” will take on a whole new meaning.

  9. Now, now, we should not make jokes about French lack of courage.  There are still brave soldiers serving France who will fight to defend the country.  They still have the Foriegn Legion, after all.

It always amuses me to remember that the first major combat unit of the French Army to rally to de Gaulle in 1940 was the 13th Foriegn Legion half brigade, a formation of foriegn mercenaries.  And the second was the Tirailleurs du Tchad, a regiment of native troops.  The Free French did not get many French soldiers who were actually Frenchmen coming over until after the Allies had conquered North Africa.

Also amusingly, the 13th Half Brigade made the first amphibious assault of WWII, during the Norwegian Campaign of 1940.  British officers had refused to commit British troops to a movement against the Germans in Narvik from across the fjord because they deemed it too dangerous.  The French officers agreed to do it, so it was left to soldiers from the desert to do the job (mentioned in the book A Study of Warfare In Three Dimensions by MG J. L. Moulton RM (retd.)).

More seriously, if there is an uprising of radical Muslims in the banlieus, I expect the French to fight back savgely.  Take a look at what they did in Algeria during the war there.  Even the worst of the false complaints about Gitmo will pale by comparison.

  10. So is this the time to dredge up the link to my favourite magazine cover of all time?

    Soldier of Surrender

It’s an oldie, but it gets me every time.

  11. Jorg, that reminds me of one I’ve heard - “Disneyland Paris had to stop their nightly fireworks display because the French army kept surrendering to them”.

  12. My favorite joke was presented on either Merde in France or the Dissident Frogman.  It was France’s secret weapon to avoid the wrath of the Islamists:  a tube of Vasoline.

Sorry, I tried finding the posting to offer a link but uh, well, after three minutes I just gave up.  I think I might be part French.

  13. The giving up part I mean.  Not the Vaseline part.

(Boy I hope McEnroe doesn’t see that).

  14. I agree with Michael Lonie. It’s my impression that the ethnic French as a whole have never quite accepted their Muslim immigrants as “part of our nation/people”, and combining that with the overpowering sense of French exceptionalism, I have little doubt that if the Muslims foolishly decide to rise up, the French are well capable of actions that would make the 1990s Balkans look like a toddler’s playground.
