NEWS BRIEFLETS

* Romeo Mike ponders a 60-year-old Sydney mystery.

* The Boston Herald’s Jules Crittenden reviews October’s delights: Korean nukes, e-molestation of pages, and super-massive Iraqi death estimates.

* Karl at Protein Wisdom: “Clearly, the Left must accept a share of the blame for what their bellicose rhethoric has produced.”

* Patterico: “Men across the country are measuring themselves using Lancet math — and liking the results!

* This two-week-old walrus story ran in yesterday’s Sydney Sunday Telegraph. Still, cute walrus.

* A letter to the Guardian: “1914-1918, four years of high-intensity warfare - British dead, 652,000; 1939-1945, six years of high-intensity warfare - British military and civilian dead, 460,000; 2003-06, three years of low-intensity warfare - Iraqi dead, 655,000? I hate to be forced to agree with George Bush.”

  1. I hope this will be the only time in my life when I say, “What a cute walrus!”

  2. I thought Jules’ column was good.  But I like this guy’s comment better.  It had the smack of authenticity.  Sorry Jules, I’m tough to please.

  3. I’ll comment here as Romeo Mike has no comment box. In the image it appears as if the vehicles right front fender is smashed, most likely by a pesky pedestrian. And given the close proximity of the crowd, it appears the driver has good reason not to get out of the vehicle.

  4. I just checked my bank accounts and, using the patented Lancet-math combined with the Lira Extrapolation J-curve Algorithm, I’m now rich beyond my wildest dreams!

  5. In WWI and WWII the Brits fought mainly Europeans who were fighting among thmselves too..
Now we are fighting Arabs who are fighting among themselves too.
Has anyone accused Lancet of racism yet?

  7. You’re right, Wronwright. Crittenden has a real way with words, unlike that Boston newspaper guy. I’ll bet that if they were to armrassle, Crittenden could beat him with his pinky.

Crittenden Rules! Take that, Boston newspaper guy!

    Cheers

  8. Following Crittenden’s story and the Nork nukes: there was a post here a few days ago saying that John Howard was prepared to send ships to help blockade N. Korea, but now the Royal Navy says that they can’t manage to do the same.

I know that the Aussie navy is smaller than the RN, what’s up with the Brits?

  9. I put that post up, 91B30.

A permanent RN presence in the Far East and Pacific regions ended long ago.

Occasionally, the RN deploys a significant Naval Task Group (NTG) for task specific operations or as part of the Five Powers Defence Arrangements (FPDA:  United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore).

Beides, The RAN might get a budget boost to add a few hulls to this list, preferably Anzac Class Frigates.

Who knows, maybe our cousins in the LOTF&HOTB; will float a few new Aegis Class Destroyers our way.

    [/H.Simpson]mmmmm, Aegis Class…[/H.Simpson]
