OLD MEDIA SHATTERED
New Scientist claims:
The first human-powered commercial hydrofoil, resembling a bizarre cross between a pogo stick and a jet ski, has gone on sale.
The first, you say? Well, maybe ... if you don’t count the Aqua Skipper!
Via reader Hugo, who notes: “It’s not often that you’ll get a scoop of this magnitude. Rathergate has nothing on this.” In other Big Media research hilarity, the Sydney Morning Herald reports:
Yesterday’s article “Informant out to hurt Corby - lawyer” attributed to Alex Hawke, the national president of the Young Liberal Movement, comments on the Schapelle Corby case that had been posted on a website. Mr Hawke says the comments were a hoax and that police are investigating the matter.
The SMH didn’t check the source of those comments. Remember Simon Jenkins’ claim that the mainstream media spends “millions” finding and checking information? The SMH doesn’t. By the way, scroll down to see the SMH’s ingenious correction technique ...
It seems to me that if your feet slipped forward, that Aqua Skipper design is a recipe for one heck of an unfortunate injury.

Posted by richard mcenroe on 2005 05 25 at 10:48 AM • permalinkThe correction up front, then the article, then the original stuff that was admitted to being incorrect marked out rather than just ‘missing’. Seems to me this is a decent attempt at being accountable for showing the error to the readers. Only thing missing is correcting the CAUSE of those errors, say by actually doing some fact checking first. Baby steps, folks. Baby steps.
No doubt Old Media Watch will be all over the SMH for their mistake and misrepresentation of the reliability of postings on forums. Also found it extremely difficult to find the particular posting, why didn’t SMH provide the particular url. Most of the postings I did find are hidden behind nicknames. Maybe I am not navigating the site well, but it would seem to me that to use one’s own name there might send some kind of warning to who ever was writing the story. Or didn’t SMH even look. Just let some other person pass it on to them.
Maybe however the SMH tried to ring Alex Hawke and he had the hide to not be answering when they called.
This Schapelle site, raising money, including for the Indonesian lawyers. I read that the Indonesian defence team was working pro bono, is this true?
I think the best that can be said to those who are handing over their dough is that, a fool and their money are easily parted.

New Scientist lied!
Aqua’s inventor cried.
Quick, alert Media Watch. If they find out that these ‘scientists’ are being paid, there will be merry hell to pay. Woe betide them if they are, gasp, Republicans.
