POWERFUL SIGN OF RESPECT
Those Big Mo cartoons have now cost a French newspaper editor his job:
The owner of French newspaper France Soir on Wednesday dismissed the publication’s managing editor after the paper reproduced a set of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed first published in Denmark that have created an uproar in the Muslim world.
France-Soir owner Raymond Lakah said in a statement to AFP he “decided to remove Jacques Lefranc as managing director of the publication as a powerful sign of respect for the intimate beliefs and convictions of every individual.”
“We express our regrets to the Muslim community and all people who were shocked by the publication” of the cartoons, the statement added.
M. Lakah is a bolo.

Yeah, figures. You know, without a doubt, if these were cartoons about the religious right, or buddists or catholics or jews, that publisher wouldnt hesitate for a minute. Probably would step up the publishing of cartoons. But Islam? Well, they kill people. Blow things up. Must show sensitivity.

Nope, the French-Egyptian M. Lakah is no bolo according to the definition.
The reason that he is not may also shed some light on his motivations.
Still not sure if he is Christian or Muslim though. get digging, people !
he is thus either supporting the home team, or exhibiting the generational dhimmitude of Egyptian Christians.Just when it looked like frenchmen were going to start wearing their ovaries on the outside again….
BTW does any of our papers over here intend to start running any of these fairly mild cartoons??
Nah thought not.Posted by thefrollickingmole on 2006 02 02 at 12:24 AM • permalinkM. Lakah will enjoy a place at the right-hand of the Caliph of France.

Read the BBC article about this, there is an interesting quote:
The president of the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM), Dalil Boubakeur, had described France Soir’s publication as an act of “real provocation towards the millions of Muslims living in France”.
The way he says it, instead of leading us to believe people are merely offended, those words show that millions of French Muslims are angry and easily provoked.
After years of anti-semitic cartoons from the Arab world and Leunig, do you think Jewish leaders would refer to each offensive cartoon as “an act of provocation” ?
I worship George Bush. I date time from George Bush Jr’s birth. His daughters will inherit the earth and JH is his prophet.
Now I will be deeply, deeply offended if any newspaper publishes a satirical cartoon. Shall I commence naming names?
All left wing cartoonists must leave Australia immmediately otherwise the war will continue and we will attack your embassy.
I find Mr. Lakah deeply offensive. When will he remove himself from my planet?
Or do I need to start torching Renaults to get some respect from this spineless sack of shit?
No, on second thought, I don’t want his respect. It would doubtless manifest itself in frenzied bootlicking in a pool of his own urine.

A quick google shows that M.Lakah comes from a background in travel and is associated with Safar Travel, who organise tours to hajj each year. I can’t see a christian, even a completely dhimmified one doing that.
Of course, I could be wrong on that.

According to NRO he is a catholic and human rights activist:
a business entrepreneur, philanthropist, and social-reformer politician, is a citizen any country would be proud to call its own and one that Egypt desperately needs if it is to develop into a successful democratic state
Well there you go!

the BBC reports that “Under the headline “Yes, we have the right to caricature God”, France Soir ran a front page cartoon of Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Christian gods floating on a cloud. It shows the Christian deity saying: “Don’t complain, Muhammad, we’ve all been caricatured here.”
The full set of Danish drawings, some of which depict the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist, were printed on the inside pages.”Posted by arnienelly on 2006 02 02 at 02:59 AM • permalinkRef 18. Bugger. He is a Copt. Somebody shoot me, please! I am so not on the ball today.

Apparently the paper in Denmark published the pictures recently (hello? 4 months or so ago is not recent news in my book) and images of Mohammed are forbidden.
Didn’t catch the commercial networks.

I’m waiting for the cartoon that portrays Mo’, his favorite goat, and his nine year old wife. Whatta family portrait. Of course with the goat and little girl in chador, we might not be able to tell them apart. The little girl might in reality be a little boy.
#29. I can see why “Lakah-bashing” is apparently a fun pasttime over in Egypt. I’m going to have to keep an eye on him. Could be a hoot. And unlike Skasey, he’s still alive and kicking! :)
Posted by Nilknarf Arbed on 2006 02 02 at 08:34 AM • permalinkAt least the French surrendered after a bit of a fight. The cartoonist “artists” in the USA are trembling in their closets, afraid to utter a single stroke on canvas. As for the rest of the leftist community, so shreikingly wrought up about freedom of speech and civil rights, eager enough to defend the depiction of the Virgin Mary covered in feces and the crucifix dropped in urine, nary a sound in defense of freedom from that hypocritical group.
The Guardian have printed this extract from France Soir, I’ll reprint it here (I assume that is OK to do):
It is necessary to crush once again the infamous thing, as Voltaire liked to say. This religious intolerance that accepts no mockery, no satire, no ridicule. We citizens of secular and democratic societies are summoned to condemn a dozen caricatures judged offensive to Islam. Summoned by who? By the Muslim Brotherhood, by Syria, the Islamic Jihad, the interior ministers of Arab countries, the Islamic Conferences - all paragons of tolerance, humanism and democracy.
So, we must apologise to them because the freedom of expression they refuse, day after day, to each of their citizens, faithful or militant, is exercised in a society that is not subject to their iron rule. It’s the world upside down. No, we will never apologise for being free to speak, to think and to believe.
Because these self-proclaimed doctors of law have made this a point of principle, we have to be firm. They can claim whatever they like but we have the right to caricature Muhammad, Jesus, Buddha, Yahve and all forms of theism. It’s called freedom of expression in a secular country ...
For centuries the Catholic church was little better than this fanaticism. But the French Revolution solved that, rendering to God that which came from him and to Caesar what was due to him.
I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Posted by Stoop Davy Dave on 2006 02 02 at 11:39 AM • permalinkSo, a French newspaper grew a spine, crawled out of the muck, sniffed the clean air of liberty, didn’t like it, and resumed its invertebracy. Berets off to Jacques LeFranc for his courage. Lakah should be locked up in a room with his creditors for a few hours. I see from his photo that he’s managing to keep his chins up.
The Leftoid Media Press on its knees to the Muslims. Cartoonist Toles produced an ugly cartoon demeaning wounded US soldiers. The Joint Chiefs of Staff wrote a public letter, a rare event for them, informing the paper that it objected to its insult to miliary men who had sacrificed for their country. Toles, and the Washington Post , refused to apologize. From Blogmeister Blog, there is this statement:
“Some on the left will probably cry that the Joint Chiefs are trying to subvert the First Amendment rights of Toles and the Washington Post. That, of course, is ridiculous. They wrote a letter to tell the Post how they felt about the cartoon. They didn’t have the newspaper offices stormed by soldiers or special agents and its staff taken away in chains while the building was set on fire.
So there you have it. American papers aren’t afraid to print controversial cartoons that feature our military in unflattering circumstances. They aren’t afraid to offend our troops and their families. Will they take up the cause of Denmark and show solidarity with their European counterparts in the name of free speech? Will they risk upsetting Muslims? I doubt it. But I could be wrong.”
No, he wont be wrong. As pointed out elsewhere, these degraded scum scream, without irony, that their free speech is being threatened and their screams are carried through a compliant press. But they reveal their hypocrisy and cowardnice by letting the Muslims beat them into silence.#31 Crash. good point - she’d make mincemeat of Wronwright.
