SLAVISH DEVOTION

The SMH’s Mike Carlton:

[John] Howard’s slavish devotion to Bush and his Republican Party leaves Australian policy and attitudes precariously out of synch with the new mood in America.

From now, he can stroll with his Texan buddy in the White House Rose Garden and wolf down barbecued ribs at the Crawford ranch until he is blue in the face, but it will not play well with a Congress controlled by the Democrats ...

Carlton appears to be arguing for a reflexive change in Australian policies purely due to altered circumstances in the US; a curious view from someone who ordinarily rails against following US opinion. Who’s the “slave” now, Mike?

  1. Carlton is a schizophrenic contrarian broadcaster with a fossilised sense of humour.

  2. Carlton is the ultimate group-thinker.
He checks with his buddies - Adams, Ramsay, Grattan, O’Brien, Jones (oops, Tony not Alan) etc etc then scrawls his venom.

Carlton is a one trick pony. Same old same old every time. Regular as a Swiss watch. He is so predictable and his positions so entrenched, I reckon I could write his column for him.

Funny thing about Carlton, he never gets to the meat and potatoes - he always blusters around his subject with stuff like his Texan buddy, the Rose Garden, Crawford Ranch etc - all the floss and dross minus substance, no deep analysis or research on his subject. All we come away with from Carlton’s scribble is his(tick boxes)
    □  deep hatred for Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld
    □  deep hatred of Howard/Downer/Abbott etc
    □  deep hatred of conservatives
    □  deep hatred of Alan Jones
    □  deep hypocrisy
    □  deep double standards
    □  deep stupidity for holding such loony views all his life

Yeah, I thought American elections shouldn’t influence the world!  Wasn’t that the driving force behind the Graduian’s “Ohio” campaign in the 2004 elections?

Oh, wait, the lefties liked the results of this election.  Silly me.

  5. The Australian left has been getting its radicalism from Amerikkka for decades - it’s one of the biggest and most amusing ironies of political discourse in this country. The Freedom Rides, anti Vietnam War moratoriums, Berkeley postmodernism, Michael Moore BusHitler hatred, obsession with real and imagined “neocons” - all fully imported from the United States. Carlton and his ilk constitute the longest and strangest conga-line of Lathamite suckholes in Australian history.

  7. On the page with imported protests & anti-US moonbattery: anti-G20 websites are exhorting people to deface public buildings with graffitti as part of protests against the G20 meeting.  The Collins Street Baptist Church has therefore had to organise security to prevent damage to the building, which will be right in the middle of a rally.  This will cost over $5000, diverting funds from programs like lunch for the homeless.  It is disgraceful that money will be taken from feeding the needy to prevent a bunch of bong-smoking swampy scruffs defacing a historic Melbourne landmark.  The Collins Street Baptists may be a bunch of lefty wets, with a distressing penchant for voting Labor, but they are genuinely charitable to the poor and downtrodden.  The gross hypocrisy of the anti-G20 activists who want to save the world by trashing their home deserves wide publicity.

Collectivism allows for every contingency.  All you have to do is follow the mob—as long as the mob appears to agrees with you.

  24. SLAVISH DEVOTION

It’s true that in warmaking activities the United States has demonstrated a slavish devotion to our Australian allies.  Since 1917 (long before Howard or Bush even existed) the one constant in American foreign policy has been:  We simply will not fight a war in Europe or Asia unless the Australians are on our side.

It’s a tad bit embarrasing being the obedient poodles of the Australians…but, all things considered, it’s a hell of a lot better than being the poodles of the Germans.

  28. Our assholes in the MSM have been pushing the same crap here including the spin that this shows some huge move to the left by everyone in North America, so our Conservatives are out of synch and doomed, especially with Harper’s best buddy, Bush, out in the cold.

Not one of Canada’s liberal MSM outlets, at least not that I read or watched, discussed the “blue dog” Dems who were elected or any of the conservative referenda initiatives (anti-SSM; anti-eminent-domain etc.) that won handily. And they also were happy to discuss Republican corruption as a root cause while conveniently ignoring federal liberal Liberal corruption here and what that portends for any failure of our Conservative minority government and a new election.

One minute the election was a sweeping victory for the Democrats; the next, since so many of the conservative Republicans voted out were replaced by almost-as-if-not-even-more-so conservative Democrats, nothing much has really changed.

  30. Mike Carlton shops for bread and milk, and shaved cheese, at the Barefoot Boulevard, corner of Old Barrenjoey Road and Avalon Parade. He sips latte on the seaplane jetty at Governor Phillip Park and buys the finest chardonnay at the Palm Beach Cellars. He can sense the heady fragrance of gardenias drifting on the summer nor’easters, and he can always find a parking spot outside Jonah’s.

    Hey Mike!

It’s all so much projection and wishful thining passed off as insight.

As Tigerhawk noted—with a link back here to Tim’s coverage of the Australian elections—if Republicans would have held both houses, we’d have been treated to the usual spin about the election turning on ‘local’ issues.  Just as the press didn’t think the 2004 U.S. elections delivered a ‘verdict on Iraq.’

I hold no brief for Jones the capitalist, but finding he was a close friend of Bradman cancels anything Masters’ nasty book could say.  Bradman knew people, and that’s good enough for me.
It was a very inspiring way to answer all his grubby critics.
Jones must be the only homosexual who coached Australian Rugby successfully, and held the respect of the Great Icon of Australian Sport as well.

Ditching Bolton will be a sign that they ARE that bad, and don’t care for their country’s reputation or future..

I just hope they are not the same as the New Left in the 70s - if we can’t WIN a War, let’s be the first to make sure we LOSE it…

In my view, [old enough to remember Sputnik and JFK’s death] Iraq is 10X as critical for world stability as Vietnam ever was.
That’s the main reason Blair is in there this time, but Wilson stayed out of Vietnam in the 1960s.

Actually, Anti-Americanism predates the US as a country. It was determined by early 18th century “scientists” or philosophers as I believe they were called in the way back when, that nothing but the grotesque could come from the new world, due to the high humidity.

Then, when the “founding fathers” chose rationalism over romanticism as the philosophical base for the US, it was all over but the dehumanizing, as far as european (mostly french) “thinkers” were concerned.

Even before the US had a military that could project outside our own borders, we were the “filthy noisy greedy souless” people.
