TAKE A TIP FROM MR. ASO

A comparative review of Kevin Rudd’s Chinese cleverness. And not-quite-so-fascinating thoughts from Rudd treasurer-lite Wayne Swan:

“There is certainly a view that the world outlook next year is slower, probably much slower than people had previously anticipated. And we’re not immune from that at all.”

Yep; nobody saw that coming.

  1. Aunty Radio News recently paraphrased Rudd’s speech as saying that a zhengyou is a ‘true friend’ who will offer friendly criticism, i.e. in the context of China’s treatment of Tibet.

Aunty must be running Rudd’s PR department - or vice-versa ...

  2. What’s this friend bullshit? China’s a good customer, that’s about it. We give you shiploads of dirt, you give us cheap and disposable goods. Nothing more, nothing less. Deal with it, you stupid, commie fucks.

  3. Ampontan has nailed Pomfret perfectly (apart from how to spell his name); the guy is a total waste of space when it comes to China. It’s a pity he didn’t also take a few swipes at Barme (another lefty in love with Rudd). Although I am surprised at Barme’s gushing over Rudd’s “friend” tactic (even though he’s a self promoter of the highest order, Barme does know a hell of a lot about China and Chinese).

Rudd is being played by the Chinese but he’s so puffed up with importance that he can’t see it. All this will come back to bite him badly; just give it time.

Oh, what fine new clothes you wear, Emperor Ludd ...

  5. Very interesting link (to the Japan blog). Looks like Rudd’s great achievement is to accurately describe the kind of relationship he genuinely wants with China (and his failure is to be blind to the fact that he isn’t likely to get it). Greatly enjoyed the comments from the delightfully-named Mr. Aso.

  7. Swan is better described as Rudd’s Treasury spokesman.  He is a great parrot of Rudd speak.  Take him away from the prepared script, and watch him crumble.  My motherinlaw makes more sense on the economy than he ever will.

    Treasurer-lite?  Not even Treasurer-might.

  8. An interesting link. The Japanese are similar in that they did the same thing to us on resource prices in the 70’s and 80’s. Power and self interest is not limited totally to the Chinese. Hanyu might correct me, though I didn’t think that Rudd’s Putonghua was particularly fluent or polished. However, because of our juicy resources, Rudd will always be China’s bitch and be given certain leeway, so long as China gets its paws on our goodies.

As to the world economy, the extent to which ‘America’s sneeze’ is felt elsewhere is shown in this interesting article.

  9. When Rudd said “a true friend is one who can be a zhengyou, that is a partner who sees beyond immediate benefit to the broader and firm basis for continuing, profound and sincere friendship” he was not talking about Australia but himself.

His “criticisms” of China’s human rights record were intended to defuse Tibet protests during the Canberra torch relay. China desperately needs, for domestic propaganda purposes, footage of Western Europeans cheering its torch. The price was letting Rudd score some points at home. The Chinese populace heard none of it, only Rudd crawling all over his Chinese hosts.

    A win-win I should think.

  10. The Chinese will listen to Australia so long as:

    (1) We have resources that they need;

    (2) We have a sufficiently powerful military that they can’t just walk in and take those resources.

Mr Rudd, work harder on (2).
